ANA names Prof. Remi Raji, Prof JOJ Nwachukwu- Agbada and Prof Zaynab Alkali new ANA Fellows


ANA NAMES PROF. REMI RAJI, PROF JOJ NWACHUKWU- AGBADA AND PROF ZAYNAB ALKALI NEW ANA FELLOWS



Prof. Remi Raji, Prof JOJ Nwachukwu Agbada and Prof Zaynab Alkali have been named as new ANA fellows by the advisory and the national executive council of the Association of Nigerian Authors under the leadership of Mallam Denja Abdulahi.

This was contained in a press statement issued and signed by Mallam Denja Abdulahi, the President of the Association in Abuja on Monday.

Mallam Denja Abdulahi said that the nominations of Prof. Remi Raji, Prof JOJ Nwachukwu Agbada and Prof Zaynab Alkali into the prestigious circle of distinguished elders of the Association is in recognition of their literary and scholarly excellence and their devoted service to the progress of the Association over the decades.

According to him “The ANA fellow designation reflects achievement at the highest level of writing practice and excellence; we look forward to honoring these 3 great wordsmiths and thanking them for their contributions to ANA and creative writing in Nigeria”.

The induction into the fellowship will take place at the Opening ceremony of the 38th International Annual Convention of the Association scheduled for 1st November 2019 in Enugu, Enugu State.

Remi Raji is the pen name of Aderemi Raji-Oyelade, author of six volumes of poetry including A harvest of laughters (1997), Lovesong for my wasteland(2005), Gather my blood rivers of song (2009) and Sea of my mind (2013). His poetry has been translated into French, German, Catalan, Swedish, Ukrainian, Latvian, Croatian and Hungarian. Raji has been visiting professor and poet to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Universities of California at Riverside and Irvine, University of Cape Town, South Africa, Stockholms University, Sweden, Cambridge University, UK, and Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany. He was African editor of Drumvoices Revue – Journal of Contemporary Arts and Literature (1999-2010). His seminal publication in cultural theory and practice is entitled Playful Blasphemies: Postproverbials as Archetypes of Modernity in Yoruba Culture(2012). Remi Raji is the former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, the largest body of writers on the African continent (2011-2015). He teaches Literature and Creative Writing in the Department of English, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.

JOJ Nwachukwu-Agbada, is a professor of English at the Abia State University, Uturu. A prolific writer and author of many books, he won the 2018 Association of Nigerian Authors, (ANA), poetry prize with his book Bombblast or Breakfast. He was educated at the Universities of Jos and Ibadan, from where he earned two degrees. He taught at the Federal Advanced Teachers’ College, Abeokuta; Anambra College of Education, Awka, Anambra State, and Imo State University, Okigwe, now Abia State University, Uturu. He was a one-time member of the governing council of the university. He had, at various times, been the head of English department; coordinator, head of the School of Humanities and director of the division of general studies of ABSU.
Zaynab Alkali is a Nigerian novelist, poet and short story writer. She is regarded as the first woman novelist in English from Northern Nigeria. Alkali was born in Tura-Wazila in Borno State in 1950. She graduated from Bayero University Kano with a BA in 1973. She obtained a doctorate in African Studies in the same university and became the principal of Shekara Girls' Boarding School. She went on to be a lecturer in English at two universities in Nigeria. She rose to be a dean in the Faculty of arts at Nasarawa State University in Keffi, where she taught creative writing.
Some of her works include, The Stillborn, Lagos: Longman (Drumbeats), 1984, The Virtuous Woman, Longman Nigeria, 1987,Cobwebs & Other Stories, Lagos: Malthouse Press, 1997, , The Descendants, Tamaza, 2005, ,The Initiates, 2007. She also edited Zaynab Alkali, Al Imfeld (eds.), Vultures in the Air: Voices from Northern Nigeria, Ibadan-Kaduna-Lagos:­ Spectrum Books, 1995, and won the 1985 edition of the Association of Nigerian Authors(ANA) Literary Prize.

It should be recalled that the previous fellows that have been inducted in the life of the present administration of ANA includes: Dr Wale Okediran, Prof Jerry Agada, Late Captain Elechi Amadi, Prof Idris Amali, Prof Akachi Ezeigbo and Prof Sam Ukala

Prof. E.E. Sule to give Keynote Address at ANA’s 38th International Annual Convention

PROF. E.E. SULE TO GIVE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT ANA’S 38TH INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL CONVENTION





The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has announced that Professor E.E Sule of the IBB University, Lapai, Niger State will give the Opening Ceremonies keynote address at the 38th International Annual Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) 2019 which has been scheduled to hold from 31st October -3rd November, 2019 with the theme " Literature, Nationalism and the Poetics of Integration."

This was contained in a press statement issued and signed by the National President of the largest writers’ body in Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Denja Abdulahi in Abuja yesterday.

It will be recalled that the “Coal City”, Enugu State won the bid to host the 38th Annual International Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and the LOC was inaugurated by the National Executive Council on the 29th of June 2019 in Enugu recently.
E. E. Sule (also known in the academic circle as Sule Emmanuel Egya) is an essayist, poet, novelist, and a leading scholar of contemporary Nigerian writing. He is a professor of African Literature and Cultural Studies at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, where he served as Head of Department of English, and Dean of Faculty of Languages and Communication Studies. He teaches Literature, Literary and Cultural Theory, and Creative Writing. At various times he taught at Nasarawa State University, Keffi; University of Abuja, Abuja; Federal University, Dutse; Police Academy, Wudil; Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa; and University of Bonn, Bonn.


His research interests include political poetics, feminist aesthetics, the diasporic experience in contemporary African literature, and representation of ecological crises in literature. He is the author of thirteen books and over one hundred academic articles and literary essays. Notable among his works are Power and Resistance: Literature, Regime, and the National Imaginary (2019, forthcoming); Makwala (2018); Niyi Osundare: a Literary Biography (2017); Nation, Power and Dissidence in Third Generation Nigerian Poetry in English (2014); Sterile Sky (2012); Poetics of Rage: a Reading of Remi Raji’s Poetry (2011), and What the Sea Told Me (2009).

He is the recipient of about twenty-six local, national and international awards, prizes, grants, and fellowships. They include: ANA/NDDC Gabriel Okara Poetry Prize (2009); Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship (2009); African Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship (2012); IBB University Management Merit Award for the Most Outstanding Academic Staff (2013); Visiting Fellowship at Cambridge University (2014); TETFUND Manuscript Development Award (2016); Rachel Carson Writing Fellowship (2018); and TETFUND National Research Grant (2019).

Finally, Mallam Denja Abdulahi said more information about the forthcoming ANA’s 38th International Annual Convention will be unfolded in the coming days.

ANA Inaugurates Ndubuisi Eneh as Chairman, Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of her 38th International Convention


ANA INAUGURATES NDUBUISI ENEH AS CHAIRMAN, LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE (LOC) OF HER 38TH INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION



The former Enugu State Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Hon Ndubuisi Eneh was on Saturday, June 29, inaugurated as the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 38th International Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) code named “Coal-City Homecoming 2019”.

The National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Mallam Denja Abdulahi alongside ANA’s Vice President, Dr. Camilus Uka, inaugurated the committee at the Governing Council Hall of ATCOI College of Education, Enugu, Enugu State.

It will be recalled that the “Coal City”, Enugu State won the bid to host the 38th Annual International Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) holding from 31st October -3rd November, 2019 with the theme " Literature, Nationalism and the Poetics of Integration." at the last year convention which took place in Lagos.

A renowned Poet,  Mrs Chinemerem Anyi will serve as Secretary of the Committee while Barr Ugochukwu Agballa  (a former Enugu State Works Commissioner), Sir Gregory Adiakosa  (Deputy Director of Programmes at the FRCN Enugu National Station), Dr Mrs Ojel Anidi (a Chief Lecturer at the General Studies Department of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Mr Gregory Mbajiogu (a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts of the University of Nigeria Nsukka), Mrs May Ezeudu (a former Publicity Secretary of ANA Enugu and Academic Facilitator at ATCOI College of Education), Mazi Chike Nwaka (a retired deputy co-marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and Mr Sunday Ogbonna (a former Secretary of the Enugu chapter of the Association) shall all serve as members

High point of the occasion was the unveiling of the Convention Code name and presentation of hosting documents to the Chairman and Members of the chapter by the National President of the Association, Mallam Denja Abdulahi followed by folklore performances, readings from creative texts. Also a workshop was facilitated by Dr Ojel Anidi with a special reading session featuring Barr Ugochukwu Agballa.

Comrade Zulu Ofolue, ANA Enugu Chairman in his remarks assured members of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) across the country that no matter the level of preparations for the convention, the committee will work round the clock to organize standard and acceptable convention.
In his final words, the National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Mallam Denja Abdulahi stated the preparedness of the National Executive of ANA to give maximum support to ANA Enugu towards successful hosting of the convention this year.

Gabriel Okara’s family announces Burial date, ANA set to organize “The Voice@ 55” within burial week.

GABRIEL OKARA’S FAMILY ANNOUNCES BURIAL DATE, ANA SET TO ORGANIZE “THE VOICE AT 55” WITHIN BURIAL WEEK.

 

 

 The family of the late Dr. Gabriel Okara, a lifelong Patron of the Association of Nigerian Authors, has announced Saturday, 22nd June, 2019, as the burial date for the author of Once Upon a Time.

Okara, who is from Boumadi, Bayelsa State, died at the Federal Medical Center, Yenagoa, in the evening of Sunday, 24th March, 2019.

It was gathered that the legendary poet and novelist died at the age of 97, approximately a month to his 98th birthday.

This was contained in a letter dated 14th of June 2019 issued and signed by the Chairman, Mrs. Bina Nengi-Ilagha and Secretary, Barr. Ebi Fortune Robert of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Bayelsa Chapter”

According to the letter “The Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, driven by her Bayelsa Chapter; the Gabriel Okara Foundation; the Bayelsa State Library Board; and of course, the Okara family, have come together to organize a befitting literary  programme tagged the “Voice @ 55 which will hold within the burial week”

“Unfortunately, Okara passed on while plans were already being rounded off for the celebration. This invitation was to have come earlier than now but for Okara’s sudden demise. The association was perturbed by the news of his demise because it came at a time when preparations were in top gear to celebrate his masterpiece, The Voice, at 55.”

The Voice @ 55 in honour of Dr. Gabriel Okara promises to be an avenue of reading and appraising his works, spoken words, poetry performance, drama, tributes to mention but few. The date of the programme is Thursday, 20th June, 2019 at Gabriel Okara Cultural Center, Melford Okilo Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria by 9:00am.

Born on 24 April, 1921, in Bumoundi in Yenagoa, the prize-winning poet had verse in his works translated into several languages in the early 1960s.

As an elder statesman of Nigerian literature, the late Okara was the first modernist poet of Anglophone, who literary career spanned six decades.

After leaving school, the late Okara wrote plays and features on radio programmes. In 1953, his poem: “The Call of the River Nun” won an award at the Nigerian Festival of Arts.

Some of his poetry works were published in the literary magazine Black Orpheus, and by 1960, he had won recognition as an accomplished literary craftsman.

In April 2017, the Gabriel Okara Literary Festival was held at the University of Port Harcourt in his honour.

In both his poems and his prose, Okara draws on African thought, religion, folklore and imagery, and he has been called “the Nigerian Negritudist”.

Some of his works include: “The Voice (1964)”; his award-winning poetry, published in “The Fisherman’s Invocation (1978)”; “The Dreamer” and “His Vision (2005)” among others.
